Morbid Anatomy & Art in the Lab: Art forms in Nature
Anatomy Labs, St. Francis College, Brooklyn NY Rm 6213 (180 Remsen Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201)
Wedneday 10/19 6-9pm
Registration Limited - RSVP required.
Art in the Lab is delighted to collaborate with Morbid Anatomy Museum on a three-event series celebrating the historical context of science aesthetics.
In 1899, the celebrated biologist Ernst Haeckel produced his best-known monograph: Art forms in nature which included gorgeously rendered images produced from microscopic observation.
In this fun, low key drawing class participants will have access to microscope slides of many of Haeckel’s favorite subjects, including Radiolaria, Diatoms, and Forminifera. These will be complimented by short talks on Haeckel and his work (Joanna Ebenstein) and about patterns of growth and symmetry in nature (Alison Dell) as well as the complimentarity of science and art (Irina Ellison). We’ll provide some short suggested readings to power conversation after the event. Registration is capped so each participant can have unlimited time at their own microscope. Basic art supplies are provided, but feel free to bring your own.
